Gents, I have a bad pain inside my Adam's Apple when swallowing. Also, if I take my finger and press it into the "hole" in my Adam's Apple it hurts like hell. I've never had this problem in my life...so I am unsure what it could be. I haven't done any sort of physical activity that would have resulted in my Adam's Apple being hit. I know for sure I haven't hit my throat on anything recently.

I had slight, very slight, pain when swallowing on Sunday. The pain increased a little on Monday. And today it's much worse. The pain is only in the Adam's Apple...nowhere else. The back of my throat is not sore and I'm not coughing up any junk. I feel absolutely fine otherwise.

What the heck is this? Should I wait it out a few more days or go to the nearby "quick care" place and see what they say? I'd rather not spend any money, of course, if this thing is likely to pass. But if it warrants an inspection by a Doc, then I'll go. Any ideas?

Confused

Remember Richard, he just started a new job. He may be between insurances and the whole visit would probably be out of pocket expenses. I would think the same way if I had to cough up $125 plus lab fees to get a doc to tell me I bruised something and it will pass with a couple asprin and a cough suppresent.

Of course it may be something more serious but then again that is why he is asking on the board. To see if anyone else has had something similar. I actually have to make an appointment with a doc to check my thoart out as well. I have something similar but not close enough that it would help you Rob. I got a cold this winter and while coughing it felt like I was getting larengitis. I would get horse and had to practicly shout to be heard. It passed but now I occasionally have the same feeling pop up and it is accompanied by pain in my throat as well. Knowing my luck I probably have polyps on my vocal chords. I doubt it though. The would have done something more serious in 6 months.

Sorry I can't help you out Rob. Good luck with the problem.

Some thyroid problems present themselves this way. Thyroid nodules, for example. I'd recommend getting it checked out.

As suggested you should get it checked out. I know from bitter experience that relux disease can cause that symptom. Reflux disease can cause all sorts of problems like sore throats, bronchial problems (from aspirating acid especially at night when you are laying down) throat spasms etc.
Have you had any problems with heartburn lately?
Has your voice changed?
No matter what you THINK it is don't leave it to guesswork. Get a doctor to check it out.

Rob,

I can appreciate your concern, but I don't think any of us here (doctors included) can diagnose your problem over the internet. You really should go see a doctor in person. In any case, your money will be well-spent. You'll either buy yourself some instant peace of mind, or you'll get a head start in treating your condition. Both are good returns on your investment.

Rob,

totally coincidentally I have just had symptoms very similar to yours. I noticed a small lump on my neck after shaving and felt some soreness which got worse over a few days. On seeing a specialist and having ultrasound it turned out be a cyst which was drained when the specialist carried out a biopsy. The ultrasound guy told me that the majority of mature adults have nodules on their thyroids and the majority never have any issues with them. One of mine just happened to become a cyst. I was worried initially but the lump has gone down and there is no discomfort anymore and its now a case of just keeping an eye on things. Obviously your condition could be something else but it does sound very similar. Get it checked out and I'm sure it will not be as bad as you might fear. Hopefully my experience will help reassure any concerns you might have. Best of luck anyway.

whatever you do, don't go do webmd. No matter what you put in there they always tell you that you're going to die. Go to the doctor Rob.....your health isn't worth trying to save the money.

I also would vote for the doctor---and I'm hoping that you get to feeling better soon. Pain is no good---it hurts, in my experience.

Thanks for the replies, fellas. I'll go tomorrow morning if it doesn't feel any better. I just don't want the Doc to tell me, like Charlie said, "Take some aspirin and NyQuil and give it a few days." Gee, thanks. I spent $125 for that? However, if I spend $125 and the Doc finds something, then I'll feel it was money well spent. Or will I? Wink

In any case, thanks for the replies. I've never had any pain in this particular spot before. If I got hit in the throat over the weekend then I'd not have two thoughts about this pain. But it's inside my Adam's Apple---a very strange place to have pain, indeed! The area feels normal, though, no lumps or bumps or swelling.

The idea that I shouldn't neglect a visit to the Doc for money concerns is valid. I should be willing to spend whatever it takes to get back to 100%...and I am. I just hate spending the money anyway! Very Happy My insurance is fine and I'm covered, so that's ok. I hope I can get a shot and be done with it. If I go tomorrow I'll keep yall updated. That way, if I'm given a death sentence, we can start up the Newbie Shaving Tools Foundation in my honor. Wink

Is peace of mind with respect to your health worth four tubs of Coates?

Good move. May as well get it checked out. Why not...especially if you have insurance?

If it bothers you quite a bit, I think you should go to the doctor and get it checked out. It's difficult for any doctor to diagnose a problem without looking at the problem. Smile

...and it's even harder for a gang of wet shavers perusing the internet to diagnose a problem without looking at the problem, unless of course we are talking about an old DE razor. Laughing

I used to drink honey and rum when I had a sore throat. The more you drink the less it hurts.

Go to the doctor. I can't believe Johnnie said "don't swallow". He beat me to it. Laughing

Rob,
Not an MD here, or even a health care pro, but it sounds like thyroiditis, which is basically an inflammation of the thyroid. The only reason I know anything about it is my doc thought I might have had it awhile back. Blood tests came back negative, so he ID'ed the throat pain as simply swollen lymph glands. The pain went away after about a week and some ibuprofen. I did do some research on it, however, while waiting on the test results.
http://cpmcnet.columbia.edu/dept/thyroid/thyroiditis.html
Scroll down to the section on Painful Thyroiditis.

Definitely go to the MD.....you might try some ibuprofen in the meantime. That's what he had me take.
