If you don't intend to get a Moss scuttle, then whatever you do, do not enter into a correspondence with Sara Bonneyman, the Nova Scotia potter.

She will win you over, without even trying. I was initially put off by the seemingly high cost of delivery to the US, but after she told me that the gets the scuttles to the post office on the back of her scooter, something in me just snapped.

I ended up getting a small lamp as well. She is a world-class packer, even including a 60W bulb in the lamp!

Heck, the postage stamps alone can jump-start a philately hobby:

The scuttle works beautifully, and is easy to clean. Brings my Taylor Rose and Almond creams to life!

Greg

She really does ride a little blue and white scooter too!

I'm happy with the small Moss scuttle I received, which leaves me with enough of her pieces to now field a pretty decent pottery percussion set.

Yes, she's a delight to correspond with.

Sara was a joy to deal with -- Some of you may recall that I received my small Moss for Christmas and that it broke under somewhat unusual (to me, at least) circumstances, and she replaced it for me and covered the shipping and handling of the replacement.

My Moss is my most favourite of all my shaving accoutrements. MWF, my C&E Super Badger and my Moss -- shaving heaven!

I received my large Moss scuttle about 5 months ago and I haven't shaved without since. Sara does fantastic work.
3 days ago I put a large chip in the outer flange...... Crying or Very sad. Luckily, the damage is only cosmetic. On the other hand, I took it as a sign that I should order a small Moss scuttle as backup!.... Very Happy

I ordered a large Moss Scuttle and a lathering bowl from Sara last week. I can't wait to get it in the mail. Very easy to deal with and seems pleasant!

Still debating on the size to purchase. I'm going to buy two; one for me and one for my son-in-law for Christmas. His largest brush is the Proraso Boar Brush with the "shiny" handle that I bought him before Target stopped selling them. He also has a ShaveMac that I bought him last Christmas. I normally use smaller brushes so I'm certain the "small" one will work great for me, just want to make sure the one I buy him will work with the brushes he uses. Doc Moss said the "small" should work fine for both. I'm just a little uncertain. I trust the Doc's opinion, just looking for reassurance...

Thanks...

I know I haven't said it for a while (long story) but: "Enjoy your shave"... Very Happy

Oscar,
The small scuttle is a perfect fit for my Simpsons chubby 1, if that's any help. Anyway, regarding fit, I think you;re supposed to squish the brush down into the scuttle, force it down, to maximize bristle exposure to the warm surface.

So I don;t think fit is all that critical.

Hope this helps,
Greg

Nothing at all against the Moss Scuttle, I'd love to have one, however, I've got a vintage Seto Marujyu "Barber Soap-Cup" that is small and splendid. I can't imagine shaving without it. Just as you have suggested, I shove the lathery brush (a BK4 and one other a little larger) down into it, and it keeps the lather nicely warm.

Oscar, as far as warming the bristles and lather, the small works quite well with the Omega 48 and 20106, which have huge lofts. However, I soak my brushes while I'm showering before using them to lather up, and for soaking the bristles of my larger Omegas, it's not a workable option. The loft only gets about halfway into the water, and so it doesn't absorb as much liquid as I prefer. I have to soak my brush in the sink or a separate vessel, which I don't mind doing, as I think the large would just be too big for me. So, if you're not going to use the scuttle for a pre-shave soak, the small should be fine, but otherwise, it's at least something to think about.

Regards,

Tim,

You answered my question. I will use it for pre-shave soaking in addition to keeping the brush and soap/cream warm in between passes. I've made up my mind now. Thanks.

Enjoy your shave... Very Happy

RE: being unable to decide which scuttle.

I've had a large Moss Scuttle for over a year now (bought it from a fellow shaver either here or at B&B). I went with the large because that's what he was selling.

Theoretically, since I have medium-sized brushes, a small would be the 'right' size. Nevertheless, I still don't know which size I'd want if I were picking between the two.

So, I see two options for someone faced with this delemna:
1) Flip a coin.
2) Get both.♦

Uh-oh...I'm moving to Truro, Nova Scotia in a few weeks and I see Ms. Bonnyman's studio is but a 40 minute drive away.

Methinks my wallet may well be lightened...
